Sometimes life stressors can leave you feeling directionless, confused, or overwhelmed. Overcoming these hurdles can be tough, but you do not have to travel this journey alone. Goode Psychological Services (GPS) provides a unique approach to helping you map your journey to improved mental wellness. Fostering a genuine, supportive, empathic, and affirming relationship with my clients has helped them overcome many challenges. My objective is to help you feel more liberated and confident in expressing your feelings without fear of judgment. As your therapist, I will help you identify your inherent abilities, strengths, and resources to reach your goals in treatment.

I am a Clinical Psychologist, Certified Group Psychotherapist, and the Founder/CEO of Goode Psychological Services, PLLC (GPS). I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. I am dedicated to helping the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community navigate through life stressors and map their journey to improved mental wellness. I specialize in treating the psychological effects of racism, toxic masculinity, sexuality concerns, relationship/communication difficulties, depression, anxiety, and trauma. I have extensive experience working with men of color, parents, college students, and LGBT clients in the context of individual and group settings.

I earned my doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University. I received post graduate training in group psychotherapy from The Washington School of Psychiatry's National Group Psychotherapy Institute and a member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. 

In addition to private practice, I am a Staff Psychologist at Howard University Counseling Service (HUCS) where I provide individual and group therapy, and clinical supervision to doctoral students at HUCS' American Psychological Association accredited training program.

         MY APPROACH

My primary approach to treatment is rooted in psychodynamic theory or insight-oriented therapy. This means our work will examine unconscious material by bringing it into conscious awareness. The goal of this process is to help you become self-aware and understand the influence of your past on your present behavior and relationships. I also use a cognitive behavioral approach, which examines how thoughts and feelings can be hurdles that sometimes get in the way. 

 

My philosophy is that we have the capacity to fulfill our own potential. This means I do not prescribe to telling clients what to do. Rather, my approach is to “help you help yourself” on issues that are important to you. This approach has helped many of my clients move towards self-actualization, giving them a sense of purpose and direction.

I offer individual therapy for adolescents and adults. I strive to make sense of experiences through exploring feelings, behaviors, and thoughts that may be inhibiting. I find that insight and understanding lead to new skills and an overall improved sense of satisfaction with life.

Couples Therapy

Studies have consistently shown that unhappy married couples will wait about six years before seeking counseling. This speaks to the courage it takes to address issues that are causing conflict and distance in a relationship. Disputes that are left unresolved often create an aura of negativity within the relationship. Couples counseling explores the differing wants and needs within the relationship that affect intimacy and develops communication and problem-solving skills.  I employ an active and caring approach in couples counseling and seek to create a safe and neutral environment where collaboration is possible.

Group Therapy

Relationships are such a fundamental part of our existence. A therapeutic setting which provides a safe and appropriate opportunity to explore our concerns and behavior in relationships can be beneficial.  While this process may not always be easy, it is crucial.  Understanding and working out relationships with members in the group can help you to express emotions and experiment with new attitudes and ways of interacting with others.

WHY THERAPY?

Successful therapy will give you the tools to understand yourself, deal with transitions, develop new coping mechanisms, and grow psychologically on your own. Effective therapy relieves suffering and promotes personal growth and change.

HOW LONG DOES THERAPY TAKE?

The length of time a person chooses to stay in therapy depends on the individual. It depends upon what your individual goals are and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. Treatment is more effective when the client attends weekly sessions. Sometimes a person comes in to work on one specific goal and an awareness develops about the need to work on other goals as well. My ultimate goal is to empower you to function better on your own.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

First, we would need to schedule a 15 minute complimentary phone session before your initial appointment. The purpose of this phone session is to ensure that we are a good fit for one another. During our initial phone session, I will find out what your needs are and give you an idea of how my practice works.  I will answer any of your questions about my fees, my schedule, insurance, and anything else that you might want to know before your first appointment.  To schedule your 15 minute complimentary phone session, you can either call me at (202) 794-5320 or email me at docjgoode@gmail.com.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

I am a provider for BlueCross BlueShield CareFirst. Payment for services is due at the time of service.  If you would like to use your out-of-network insurance benefits, you will be provided with a receipt of services that you may submit to your insurance company for partial reimbursement. It is advised that you call your insurance company to verify out-of-network coverage for outpatient mental health services.

Here are some questions to ask your insurance company:

  • Do I have out-of-network behavioral health or mental health coverage?

  • What is my deductible? Has any of it been met yet?

  • How many sessions do I get per calendar year?

  • What is the covered amount per therapy session with a licensed psychologist?

  • Do I need a pre-approval?

DO YOU HAVE A SLIDING SCALE?

I reserve some sliding scale spaces. Please don’t hesitate to contact me so that we can discuss my sliding scale and try to make it work.

WHAT ARE THE RULES OF CONFIDENTIALITY?

The relationship between the therapist and client is confidential and is protected by law.  Information can only be provided to others through written consent of the client. In the exceptions of suspected child abuse/neglect or a client being in danger to herself or others, the law states that confidentiality may be broken to insure the safety of all involved.  For more information about confidentiality, please read the CONFIDENTIALITY AND CANCELLATION POLICY in the FORMS section.
